Make it a Habit to Study! Study with Good Habits!
Learn the Three Keys to Successful Studying
To do well on tests, you must do three things:
1. You must LEARN the material!
2. You must PREPARE to study!
3. You must REVIEW before the test!
LEARNING:
- writes things on the board
- reviews notes with the class
- asks questions of the class
- says, “This is important!” or “This will be on the test!”

LEARNING:
- Take GOOD notes in class.
- Make sure you fill in CORRECT answers.
- USE your notes when doing homework.
- Look over your notes BEFORE the next class.
- ASK your teacher for help when you don’t understand something.
- NOTICE when your teacher does these things:
- writes things on the board
- reviews notes with the class
- asks questions of the class
- says, “This is important!” or “This will be on the test!”
PREPARING:
- Ask WHAT will be on the test – and what won’t.
- Know what KIND of test it will be (Multiple Choice, T/F, Essay…)
- Find out how much the test COUNTS (quiz, double grade…)
- ORGANIZE all your information on the test’s topics (notes, study guides, readings, worksheets, homework, etc.).
- SET UP your study space with needed supplies and materials.
- Make a SCHEDULE of when and how much you will study.
- Set a GOAL of what you will study each session (Ch./Section…).
REVIEWING:
- START early, and keep it SHORT – daily sessions are best.
- PAY ATTENTION to study guides from the teacher!
- READ over ALL class notes, handouts, readings & homework.
- LOOK OVER any old quizzes or tests on the same material.
- ASK your teacher for help with hard topics – but don’t wait too long!
- RE-READ your study material – over and over
- MAKE study aids (flashcards, outlines, maps, study guides, etc.).
- STUDY with a BUDDY if you can be productive (friend, mom, sister…).
- Be ACTIVE – write or talk out loud as you study – engage the brain!
